On September 23rd, 2015 Dave and Amy Freeman launched their canoe in the Kawishiwi River and paddled into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They remained in the Nation’s most popular Wilderness Area for a full year (366 days), camping at approximately 120 different sites during their Year in the Wilderness and traveling over 2,000 miles by canoe, foot, ski, snowshoe and dog team.

Throughout the year elementary and middle school classrooms followed the adventure and learned along with the Freemans. Each week Dave and Amy shared a wide range of educational content designed to engage, educate and inspire elementary and middle school students. Mystery photos, video clips, scientific data, blog posts and an interactive map allowed classrooms to join in the adventure.

The Freeman’s book A Year in the Wilderness: Bearing Witness in the Boundary Waters was released in September of 2017.

  1. This sounds like an amazing opportunity for fantastically engaging lessons for my 3rd graders this fall. Can’t wait to begin. Thank you in advance.
